Last practice over for womenÕs soccer The last practice game of the year has been played, meaning that pre-season is finally over for the newly formed Phantom Lake Ladies Soccer Club. Regular play started on Tuesday, July 29, at the Creighton Community Soccer Field. The new soccer club, which is made up of women from all walks of life and vastly different abilities, is starting with four teams, with plans to expand to six before the season ends in late September. Adult soccer has long been missing in the sports world of Flin Flon, so in response to a suggestion from women soccer fans, I started a womenÕs introduction to soccer in late June, to explain and play the game. The response was so overwhelming that it was decided that there could be enough interest for a womenÕs league. As we see now, there was! We practiced on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the latter part of June and July, with more women trying the game for the first time. We learned basic skills, worked on fitness, and generally had a lot of fun. We are starting our league with four teams. They are: the Girls Next Door, the Saturday Night Specials, Victorious Secrets, and the Eager Beavers. On August 23 and 24 we will be holding the first annual ladiesÕ seven-a-side soccer tournament in Flon Flon. This tournament will also be open to out of town teams, and any team can enter as long as the players are over 16 years of age. The format will be to play two 35-minute halves, with six players plus one goalkeeper. This should allow for lots of soccer to be played by everyone involved. For information on this tournament, read this column next week.
