Both of Hapnot Collegiate’s Kweens squads have earned their shot at provincial glory.
The senior Kweens punched their ticket on their home court on Mar. 3, defeating Oscar Lathlin Collegiate and Nisichawayasihk Neyo Ohtinwak Collegiate (NNOC) in the Zone 11 tournament.
Neither team put up much resistance – Hapnot topped Oscar Lathlin 52- 15 before beating NNOC 65-15 in the round robin. After earning a bye to the tournament final, Hapnot beat Oscar Lathlin again, 44-16, to get the banner and a chance at provincials.
A week earlier at the junior varsity zones in OCN, the junior Kweens team played similarly, getting a 60-9 win over Grand Rapids before beating the Chemawawin Eagles 51-13.
In the tournament’s semi-final, Hapnot beat the St. Theresa Thunderbirds 46-17, setting up a meeting in the finals with hosts Oscar Lathlin. In the final matchup, with the zone banner and a provincial berth on the line, Hapnot came out on top, topping the Wolverines 49-37.
The junior provincials will be held this weekend at Somerset, while the senior squad will head to provincials in Dominion City from Mar. 16 to 17.
Things weren’t quite as smooth on the boys’ side.
On the senior side, the Kings beat Chief Sam Cook 56-19 before a narrow 42- 41 loss to Oscar Lathlin.
The loss put the Kings up against the Frontier Raiders in the semi-finals, where Hapnot lost 81-34. Frontier would go on to win the tournament.
The junior Kings came closer to claiming three banners for Hapnot, topping Grand Rapids 78-5 and Chemawawin 73-17. Oscar Lathlin would lose to Hapnot 48-37, with a 59- 32 win over the St. Theresa Thunderbirds putting the junior Kings in the finals.
In the tournament final, Hapnot came close but couldn’t hang on, losing to Oscar Lathlin 47-43.
