The second round of the SJHL playoffs got underway on Friday. The Humboldt Broncos showed the strain of playing seven games in the first round, getting pounded 8-1 by the well-rested Estevan Bruins. Dominic Cote, Lorne Tytlandsvik and Kyle Pellerin scored for the Bruins in the first period. Patrick McGillicky had a pair in the second period, and Steve Johnston and Cameron Jarvis added singles. Humboldt's Cameron Jarvis stopped the bleeding with the Bronco's first goal eight minutes into the third period, but Andrew Howden's goal for Estevan made it an 8-1 final. The Bruins out shot the Broncos 53-37, scoring three goals on six power plays, while the Broncos were scoreless on four chances with the extra attacker. The Battlefords North Stars edged the Kindersley Klippers 4-3, getting goals from Jesse Matlock, Dylan Wiltermuth, Riley Lang and Michael George. Troy Schwab, Jade Boklaschuk and Justin Schmit replied for the Klippers, who were out shot 32-24. The Yorkton Terriers needed triple overtime to beat the Notre Dame Hounds 4-3. Chris Korchinski tied the game for the Terriers with the only goal of the third period, and then at 31:33 of overtime, Chad Nehring scored to give Yorkton the early lead in the series. Scott Sinclair and Perry Faul had the other Yorkton goals, while Chad Anderson, Bryce Macek and Trenton Moore scored for Notre Dame. Final shots on net were 58-56 for Yorkton after a total of 91:33 of hockey. The La Ronge Ice Wolves also needed extra time to win the first game of their series with the Melfort Mustangs by a score of 3-2. Doug Exner's unassisted goal at 4:37 of double overtime was the difference. It was his second of the game. Kyle Gladue had the other La Ronge goal. Nathan Brummitt and Kurtis Astle replied for Melfort. Final shots on net were 56-50 for the Wolves. On Saturday, the Mustangs returned the favour, beating the Wolves 6-5 in overtime. Chad Richardson was the overtime hero, scoring at 2:04 of the extra frame. Nick VanDenBeld had a pair of goals for the Mustangs, while Jordan Morgan, Matt Fennell and Craig Macfie had singles. Kris Desjarlais scored twice for La Ronge, with TJ Schneider, Drew Rose and Dillon Henningson also scoring. Shots were 37-25 in favour of La Ronge, but Aaron Forer made the big saves in the Melfort net when he had to. Blizzard In the MJHL, the OCN Blizzard fell behind in their best of seven series with the Portage Terriers, losing 3-0 on Saturday night. Steve Haddon scored the only goal that mattered at the 11:17 mark of the first period. Bryan Bouchard added some insurance in the third period, and Jordan McIntyre popped one into the empty net to cap the win. OCN's Aaton Hareuther and Brett Needham were both ejected from the game for receiving match penalties. The key stat for the game was the Blizzard failing to score on nine power play chances. The Terriers took a 3-2 lead in the series with the win. Game six was last night in The Pas. Results were unavailable at press time.3/14/2005
