On the weekend of March 4, 5 and 6 the Atom 'AA' Johnny's Bombers travelled to Thompson to participate in the 2005 Atom 'AA' Provincials. Teams participating were from Thompson, Swan Valley, Portage, The Pas, Dauphin, Steinbach, Morden and Flin Flon. The first game for the local boys was Friday night against their biggest rivals of the season, the Thompson King Miners. In the first period Thompson came out with three unanswered goals. Thompson opened the second with a goal and Flin Flon answered back with a goal from Mike Ferguson assisted by Kaden Antoniuk. Thompson added two more before the second was over, the score 6-1. Flin Flon came out flying in the third with a goal from Dillan McCombie assisted by Evan Dorion, and a goal from Zach Garrett off the sticks of Dillan McCombie and Brendan Barron. A minute later Dillan McCombie put another one in the net from Devon Wintoneak. That was to be it as Thompson ended the period with two more goals, final score 8-4 Thompson. Jeff Stallard was in net. Game star was Kaden Antoniuk. Saturday morning Flin Flon came against the Swan Valley Stampeders. Flin Flon scored seven unanswered goals in the first. Goals by Nathan Johnson (3), Devon Wintoneak, Seth Fernandes, Dillan McCombie and Mike Ferguson. In the second Flin Flon once again shut out the Stamps and scored two goals, one from Zach Garrett and one from Garrett Hatherley. The Bombers once again won the third, with a goal by Garrett Hatherley and Dillan McCombie. Flin Flon won 12-0. Jeff Stallard and Edward Gardiner were in for the shut out. Nathan Johnson got a hat trick award and game star. Second game of the day brought the Flin Flon 'AA's up against Portage. The boys continued their scoring streak winning the game 9-0 on goals by Seth Fernandes (2), Dillan McCombie (3), Nathan Johnson, Brendan Barron, Mike Ferguson and Garrett Hatherley. Dillan McCombie went home with the hat trick award and Jeff Stallard the game star. At the end of the round robin play Flin Flon finished third behind Thompson and Steinbach with Morden finishing fourth. This put Flin Flon in the second vs. third game against the Thompson King Miners on Sunday morning. On ice and in the stands Thompson is Flin Flon's biggest rival. The Flin Flon fans came out the winners as being the LOUDEST. Thompson opened the scoring in the first and Flin Flon answered back with a goal by Evan Akkerman assisted by Seth Fernandes. Thompson scored two more in the last minute to end the period 3-1 Thompson. Flin Flon scored first in the second by Zach Garrett assisted by Jacob Vancoughnett. Thompson scored next and Flin Flon put two more in the net at the hands of Nathan Johnson to end the second tied at 4-4. Flin Flon opened the scoring in the third with a goal by Seth Fernandes assisted by Drew Morin and Evan Akkerman. Thompson answered back 20 seconds later to tie. At the 6:20 mark an awesome goal by Drew Morin assisted by Mike Ferguson and Brandon Eikel made the score 6-5 and the Bombers held on for the win and a sport in the provincial finals. Jeff Stallard was in net for the win. Nathan Johnson was game star. The Atom 'AA' Provincial finals saw Flin Flon versus the Morden Hawks. In the first period defense was strong and no goals went in the net. Flin Flon ended the second with a goal from Nathan Johnson. At the 7:20 mark of the third Flin Flon scored their second goal from Dillan McCombie assisted by Zach Garrett. With 3:16 left in the game it looked like Flin Flon was to become Provincial champs but Morden had something to say, as they scored three goals and an open netter to end the game 4-2 Morden. The Flin Flon 'AA' Johnny's Bombers had quite a season with a record of 18 and 5. They made it to the finals in all five tournaments they entered and won their first tournament in Dauphin. Hats off to the boys.
