‘It’s the luck of the draw’: Flin Flon’s Mixed Bonspiel merges poker, curling

Two popular pastimes were combined during last weekend’s Mixed Bonspiel at the Uptown Curling Club.

As organizer Kristina Tetreault explained, 16 curling teams competed on and off the ice in a bonspiel and team poker game.

As each team registered, players received a card. At the conclusion of each game, they drew another, with each winning team earning a chance to exchange their card with a second draw.

“It’s the second year we’ve done it this way, and it has gone off really well,” said Tetrault, who noted that the poker element gives curlers of all levels a chance to win.

“Out of our three games, our team only won one, but we still came in second,” she added. “It’s the luck of the draw of the cards more than anything.”

Volunteers and sponsors helped the event go smoothly, with prizes for every team and a home-cooked dinner shared by all the participants on Saturday night.

Results

1st: Darcy Poochay rink (flush)

2nd: Ken Tetreault rink (straight)
