Hapnot's Kopper Kweens Senior Basketball team traveled to Winnipeg for the University of Manitoba's Bison Invitational Tournament December 6-8. Twelve Senior teams and 12 junior teams from across the province and Saskatchewan attended. The team took part in a clinic on ball handling and Motion Offense by Mike McKay of Basketball Canada. The team also participated in a fundraiser for breast cancer research, which was organized by Pam Danis, the head coach of the U of M Bisons Ladies team. Players had to shoot, sing and dance to raise funds. The goal was to raise $500 and the teams were more than successful. All 24 teams pitched in. Mari Pettersen made it to the final four of the Athlete Bump competition as did Mr Clark in the Coaches Bump. A part of the competition, the Kweens sang a vintage Backstreet Boys tun from centre court to the crows at the Investors Group Gym. As Bison coach Danis said, "This fundraising effort is one way for players ot give back." On the court the team faced the reigning AAA Provincial champion Neelin team from Brandon. The score was 62-37 for Neeling. At the half the score was 47-12 and the Kweens showed character as they struggled for some respect through the second half. The second game was against Teulon and the team had learned from their test against Neelin the night before. Hapnot led early with scores of 16-11 in the first quarter and 22-21 at the half. The game was tight for the second half, but the three-point shooters for Teulon took the game away in the final minutes. The score favoured Teulon 49-43. The Kweens won their third and final game 48-33 over Sanford. The Kopper Kweens' next game will be December 19 at 7 p.m. against Creighton in the Hapnot gym. The game was originally scheduled for December 12, but was postponed until the following week.
