After concern the 83rd Annual Flin Flon Ladies’ Bonspiel might be cancelled due to a lack of participation, organizers were pleased to announce the event will “definitely be on” this coming weekend.
As of press time Friday, organizer Teresa Grindle had registered 14 teams for the venerable bonspiel.
“It’s less than we had last year since we were closer to 20,” said Grindle. “As of last week we only had two teams registered, but I was hoping to have a few more.”
Flin Flon’s reputation as a last-minute town proved spot on as the majority of teams registered last week.
Grindle attributes the continuation of the bonspiel to the organizers’ word-of-mouth campaign as well as posters and the use of social media.
A big factor, Grindle said, came from the Uptown Curling Club’s afternoon senior curlers.
“I think it had a lot to do with the afternoon curlers because they didn’t want to see [the bonspiel] not running anymore,” said Grindle. “But as of now we have enough teams for a bonspiel.”
The 14 teams, as of press time, will play in a round-robin format starting Friday with playoffs to begin on Sunday.
Though the bonspiel is only open to registered teams, Grindle says spectators are encouraged to enjoy the action.
“The curling is for just the curlers, but the bonspieling is for anyone,” she said, noting Saturday evening’s live entertainment will also be available for anyone interested in attending.
