The Hapnot Kweens varsity soccer team has capt-ured another zone title – and a shot at provincial glory.

Kelsie Mote scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 win against Thompson’s RD Parker Collegiate Trojans last Saturday, Oct. 1.

The win earned Hapnot this year’s Zone 11 championship banner and a trip to the provincial varsity tournament to be held in Winkler on Oct. 14 and 15.

The Kweens have now won 11 consecutive Zone 11 soccer titles.

The Trojans had a golden chance to tie the game with mere minutes remaining on a penalty, but goalkeeper Anna Krassilowsky made the save, earning a win and the team’s fourth clean sheet of the weekend.

The Kweens never gave up a goal in the tourna-ment, beating OCN’s Oscar Lathlin Collegiate Wolverines 7-0, Otter Nelson River High School from Cross Lake 8-0 and Norway House 5-0.

The Hapnot Kings boys’ soccer teams also took part in the zone tournament, finishing in third place with a 3-1 loss to the RD Parker Trojans in the semi-finals.

It was only the second time in 11 years that the Kings did not win a zone title. Both Hapnot teams won zone titles last year.

The Kweens are undefeated heading into provincials, having won all 10 games they’ve played this year. Even more impressive is their goal differential: while the Kweens have only given up two goals in 10 games, they’ve scored 47.

At last year’s provincials in Steinbach, the Kweens entered the tournament ranked as the ninth seed, finishing sixth. While seeds have not yet been determined for this year’s tournament, the Kweens will likely receive a higher seed.

This year’s Zone 11 tournament took place over the weekend at Opaskwayak Cree Nation adjacent to
The Pas.
