The Whitney Forum will play host to this year's Roller Goodwin Memorial tournament to be held August 3-5. Coordinator Stewart Lloyd says the fun tournament is "where a bunch of old friends who played hockey together come back together." And he adds, "A bunch of old Flin Flonners get together and we just have a gay old time." The reunion of sorts is held each year at a different venue throughout the West. "We normally have teams from Alberta and what not, but this year we've got 12 teams going in and it's mainly people from around here," says Lloyd. After leaving Flin Flon, many former residents meet up at the Roller Goodwin Memorial tournament, but Lloyd says its years may be numbered. "We have 12 teams in this year, which is pretty good," he says. But he adds, "we just aren't getting as much response as we used to." A representative from each team gets together and they decide whether the tournament will go on each year. "This may be the last year for it," says Lloyd, adding that this would "be a heart-breaker for sure." According to Lloyd, organizers need to make sure there is enough interest in the coming years to continue. "It's something we're working on," he says. The tournament was named after Roller Goodwin. Lloyd says the event needed a name "and he was just such a colourful person that it stuck." Lloyd described Goodwin as an "icon in his own way." The tournament will be played in a fun manor where teams of equal caliber will play each other. "No one wants to play a team that is going to beat them badly," says Lloyd, "so we try to make it as fair as possible." And Lloyd says that year after year, organizers learn who plays who best and can set their schedule from there. This year's schedule is already made and ready to go. The first game will get underway on Friday. There will be games all Saturday and Sunday, with a banquet and dance Sunday night.
