Flin Flon Parks and Recreation hosted the second annual indoor soccer kickoff tournament at the Whitney Forum April 30 to May 2. A total of 108 athletes participated in the weekend of fun, challenges, new friendships and a whole lot of soccer. The seats were filled with coaches, volunteers, parents and grandparents waiting to cheer on the young athletes as they chased the soccer ball with their teammates. The tournament started Friday at 5 p.m. with the final game Sunday at 5 p.m. Ten teams were ready to go head-to-head for the gold! Over 26 hours of soccer was played. Water was provided to keep the athletes hydrated and going strong. A dance was held on Saturday night, and was a great way for the soccer players to mingle off the soccer grounds. All money raised through the tournament from door prizes, 50/50 draws, toonie parades, etc. will be forwarded to the MTS Summer Games Committee (Flin Flon is hosting) and KidSport. For the tournament, players were divided into two age categories: those born between 1990 and 1992, and those born between 1993 and 95. In the 93-95 category, six teams competed for gold. The Johnny's Rockets and Super K Marvels escaped the round robin undefeated to advance directly into the quarter finals. In the preliminary playoff round, the Canadian Tiremen beat Eddie's Eagles to advance to the quarterfinals, while the Legion Warriors beat the Co-op Difference to stay on the A-side. The Rockets then beat the Tiremen to advance to the semifinal undefeated, while the Warriors knocked off the Marvels. In the A-side semifinal, the Warriors handed the Rockets their first loss of the tournament, dropping the Rockets to the B-side final, where they lost to the Tiremen. The Rockets claimed the bronze medals, while the Tiremen advanced to the finals against the Warriors. In an exciting overtime shoot out, the Legion Warriors pulled out a 2-1 victory to capture the gold medals, leaving the Tiremen the silver. Four teams battled for gold in the 90-92 category. After a round robin for seating in the playoff round, first place Subway Slammers played fourth place Gas Bar Gators in the first semifinal, while second place Treeline Timberwolves met up with third place Candy Bar Canadiens in the other semifinal. In the first game, the Gators upset the Slammers 2-1 to advance to the gold medal game, putting Subway in the bronze game. The Timberwolves advanced to the gold game with a 2-1 win over the Canadiens. In the bronze game, the Canadiens beat the Slammers 3-1, while the Timberwolves shut out the Gators 3-0 in the championship game.
