The service centre in the Murray Doell Campground in Meadow Lake Provincial Park is getting a facelift. Mark's Custom Carpentry Ltd. of Meadow Lake has been awarded a $258,118 contract to update the service centre in the campground. Campground service centres house flush toilets, sinks and showers. The service centre was built in 1988 and, 22 years later, needs to be upgraded. The work will include replacing plumbing fixtures, water heaters, the ventilation system, interior finishing, exterior cladding and roofing. The project will incorporate low-water-use fixtures and low-maintenance finishes. It is expected the upgrades will extend the life of the building by as much as 20 years. "We are committed to providing high-quality shower and washroom facilities for our park visitors," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson said. "Our provincial parks are very popular and clean, efficient washrooms help make the overall camping experience more enjoyable. Modern and well maintained facilities also help attract more visitors which is good for the parks and for the province's tourism sector." Along with replacing or upgrading some service centres, the government is also adding new electrical service to 1,000 existing provincial park campsites, 600 of those sites are available for campers to use this summer. The government has also awarded contracts for adding electrical service to an additional 248 campsites in four provincial parks. Those sites will be ready for campers to use in the 2011 camping season. The government is also upgrading some existing electrical service and upgrading or replacing boat launches, picnic tables and barbeques. Since 2008, the provincial government has spent more than $16.2 million to improve the facilities and infrastructure in Saskatchewan's provincial parks. Work on the Murray Doell service centre is expected to begin after the park closes for the season with a December 31, 2010 completion date. A public tender for the contract to replace the service centre in the Murray Doell Campground was issued on June 22, 2010.
