Submitted by Hockey Canada Defenceman Erin Ambrose and forward Emily Fulton will be the leaders of a Canadian team trying to win a second straight IIHF World Women's Under-18 Championship next month. Hockey Canada named its 20-player roster last week for the tournament Jan. 1-8 in Stockholm, Sweden. Ambrose, from Keswick, Ont., and Fulton, of Stratford, Ont., were members of the team that beat the U.S. 5-4 in overtime last January in Chicago, Ill., to win Canada's first women's under-18 title. The U.S. women defeated Canada in the final to win the first two world under-18 tournaments in 2008 and 2009. Canada's roster includes players born in 1993 and 1994. They were chosen from a 31-player selection camp that was held recently in Toronto. They'll be coached by Sarah Hodges, who is the head coach of the University of Regina women's hockey team. Cassie Turner and former national-team player France Montour will be her assistants. The coaches and Hock-ey Canada female scout Melody Davidson chose players for the roster. The under-18 team includes 18 players who were swept by their U.S. counterparts in a three-game exhibition series in Lake Placid, N.Y., in August. Canada opens Jan. 1 against Switzerland. Finland and Germany are also in the Canadian team's pool. Russia, the U.S., Czech Republic, Sweden and Japan round out the nine-team tournament. The gold medal game is Jan. 8. Canada will have two women's teams attempting to defend international titles in January. The national under-22 squad will participate Jan. 4-8 in the MLP Cup in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. The 21-player MLP Cup roster includes four players Ð Vicki Bendus, Natalie Spooner, Tara Watchorn and Courtney Birchard - who helped Canada's national team win the 2010 4 Nations Cup last month in St. John's, N.L. Canada opens the six-team MLP Cup tournament Jan. 4 against the host Swiss.
