Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Leading the game 3-0 over Russia, Canada had the game in the bag going into the third period. Or so it seemed. That mentality set the Canadians back last Wednesday, Jan. 5, as Russia won the Gold medal game of the IIHF World Juniors by a score of 5-3. Earning two back-to-back goals, only 11 seconds apart, the Russians were in the game. Within 13 minutes, the Russian team took the lead with four goals on their side. Canada had spurts of momentum throughout the period, but not enough to get the puck in the back of the net. The HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY, was quiet in the third period as Canadian fans seemed to be in shock. For the second year in a row, Canada took home Silver as they watched their opposing team earn the Gold. "Take away that third period collapse and we played some really solid hockey," coach Dave Cameron was quoted as saying in a Hockey Canada article. "We almost got the result we wanted. We did more right than wrong." At the end of the game, all three game stars were awarded to Canada. Brayden Schenn, Captain Ryan Ellis and Jared Cowen took the honours home. The players of the game were awarded to Cody Eakin of Russia and Igor Bobkov of Canada. Previous to last year, Canada took home the Gold five consecutive years. With Silver last year, Canada hoped to get back on the Gold train this year. As for Russia, they hadn't won a Gold medal on the world junior stage since their back-to-back wins in 2002 and 2003. This is the fifth Gold medal win for the team. The IIHF World Juniors 2012 will be held in Alberta.10/1/11
