Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The Flin Flon Bombers lost the biggest game of their season Monday night as the La Ronge Ice Wolves took the Survivor Series in three games. Losing 3-1, the Bombers trailed the Ice Wolves 1-0 from 3:53 of the first until the start of the third period. The visitors scored once more before the Bombers got their lone goal of the game with less than a minute to go. The Ice Wolves began the series with a win as they defeated the Bombers 5-4 in Game 1 last Friday, and then dominated the visitors 7-1 the next night. Earning their third win in a best-of-five series, the Ice Wolves will now continue on in the SJHL playoffs. It was a similar story in the Sherwood Conference as the Estevan Bruins swept the Notre Dame Hounds in three games. Playoffs Going into the series against La Ronge, the Bombers had won their last two games of the regular season. The Bombers and Ice Wolves fought a close Game 1 in La Ronge. Losing the momentum and suffering injuries, the Bombers couldn't keep up in Game 2. Flin Flonner Dillan McCombie scored the team's only goal Saturday, on a power play, to make it a 2-1 game. La Ronge came up with four goals in the second period and three more in the third _ two of which were on the power play. In games 1 and 2, the Ice Wolves outshot the Bombers 53-28 and 53-33 respectively. An extra 20 shots goes a long way. Devin Buffalo minded the mesh for the Bombers throughout the Survivor Series. In Game 3 the shots on net were more even, but the Ice Wolves still came out on top 40-32. Shaking hands with the Ice Wolves on their successful series, the majority of the Bombers stayed on the ice for one final raise of the sticks around the moose leg. With a sombre skate off the ice, the Bombers took their skates off for the last time this season. Conferences The Ice Wolves will compete against the Humboldt Broncos, who finished in first place in the Bauer Conference. The Ice Wolves took the RBC Cup last year, after downing the Bombers in the Survivor Series, and hope to do so again this year. As host team, the Broncos have a tie to the coveted championship event this year. The Battlefords North Stars, in second place, and the Nipawin Hawks, in third, will compete in a best-of-seven series. The winners of the two series will compete for the conference title. In the Sherwood Conference, the Estevan Bruins will take on the first-place Weyburn Red Wings. In second place, the Yorkton Terriers will take on the Melville Millionaires. As in the Bauer Conference, the winners of the two series will compete in a best-of-seven series. Winners from the two conferences will then compete against each other, with the winner going on to compete against the champs of the MJHL.
