Three games into the season, and the defending Royal Bank Cup champion Humboldt Broncos look to be picking up right where they left off last season - at the top. They defeated the La Ronge Ice Wolves 4-1 on Wednesday night to remain undefeated so far this season. Humboldt lost 12 players from last year's RBC winning team, but don't appear to be any worse for wear. The QMJHL connection of Kevin Duchaine and Simon Nadeau combined for five points in the win. Nadeau now has eight points in three games. Duchaine assisted on Humboldt's first three goals, while Nadeau had a goal and an assist. The Ice Wolves scored the only goal of the first period, as Kyle Gladue netted his second goal of the year at 5:05. Jeff Furlong tied the game at 1:17 of the second period, and Arlen Marshall broke the tie at 17:37. Nadeau and Scott Degelman added goals for Humboldt in the third period. The Broncos outshot the Ice Wolves 37-25, and scored one power play goal on five chances, while the Ice Wolves were scoreless on eight tries. In Melfort, the Mustangs continue to struggle with putting the puck in the net, as they lost to the Kindersley Klippers 3-1. Melfort is now 0-2-1 on the season, and has scored only seven goals in three games. Troy Schwab scored the first goal of the game on a power-play midway through the second period, but Ted Unrau tied the game for Melfort with a power-play marker at 2:42 of the third. Jason Fleck broke the tie at 12:13, and Kevin Buyan scored 24 seconds later to add some insurance for Kindersley, who are 3-1 on the season. The Estevan Buins couldn't keep up with the Terriers, as they lost 5-1 in Yorkton. Josh Cudmore scored a power-play goal, whlie Trent Cassan and Justin Keller each had short-handed goals in the third period. Cassan and Cudmore also had even strength goals for the Terriers. Scott Sinclair was the lone goal scorer for Estevan with a power-play goal late in the second period.
