Hapnot Collegiate's House League season kicked off with a lot of hype on Tuesday, as Student Council held an assembly to reintroduce the system. The entire school was divided into four teams or colours, and as the students entered the gymnasium, they were asked to sit with their team, while lights flashed, music blared and beach balls were tossed around to create a festival atmosphere. Student Council members threw candy into the crowd and drew for door prizes to keep the student body on their toes, and then provided some entertainment with a dance to Michael Jackson's Thriller. After introductions of the current Student Council, a review of the House League system was given to remind students of how to earn points for their team. Points are given away for academic challenges, sports challenges, school spirit and participation, and pretty much anything else that happens in the school during the year. Two challenges were held at the assembly on Tuesday, survivor style. During the first challenge, participants were given a McDonald's meal, with big points going to the person who could eat it the fastest. See 'Points' P.# Con't from P.# Before they could sink their teeth into it, however, the food was taken from them and put into a blender, burger, fries and a Coke, and turned into a Happy Meal shake. Marcos Hurtado from the yellow team easily won the challenge, defeating the three girls on the green, blue and orange teams. The second survivor challenge was an obstacle course, where teams worked together to subtract points from the other teams. Orange and yellow lost the most points, with blue and green right behind. Next on the House League agenda is 'No-shave November' where guys will go all month without shaving their face, and girls will refrain from shaving their legs. The guy and girl with the most growth at the end of the month will receive major points for their team. Also, students can earn points by saving Campbell's Soup Labels during the school year. Coming up, Hapnot will be hosting a Halloween Dance for its students, and the Student Council is also planning a Haunted House for the entire community to enjoy. The Haunted House will be open to the public on Saturday, October 30, from 1-3 p.m. (tentatively scheduled). The Student Council is looking for community members to get involved with the planning and construction of the Haunted House. You can contact Trent Tuttosi at the school to volunteer or for more information call 687-7506. The dance for students will be held on October 27. For the remainder of this week and all of next week, students will be helping the Elks with canvassing for their Christmas Cheer program.
