Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The 10th annual Beat the Chief challenge was as entertaining as ever. Helping to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Flin Flin Fire Department, the competition attracted plenty of spectators. The competition helped kick start the Saturday, June 30 activities of the Flin Flon Trout Festival as 15 firefighters made their way through an obstacle course simulating actions they are put through on a regular basis. Starting off with a stair climb, with a hose over their shoulders, contestants then hauled a set of weights on a pulley system before racing through a figure-eight formation inside the Fire Hall. Once outside the hall, competitors aimed a fire hose to knock a bucket off a table before dragging a life-size dummy from one line to another. Dan Hotel was this year's big winner as he finished the course in 1:09.40. Second place went to Kevin Kemp at 1:10.41 as Darren Romo picked up third place with a time of 1:12.09. Following the adults, children lined up to compete in a smaller version of the course as they had to rescue Ruffus, a stuffed dog, thrown into a tunnel. From there, the children used a garden hose to hit the bucket on the table. As usual, Fire Chief Jim Petrie walked away soaked from the hose as each competitor switched from the bucket to the chief. Beat the Chief kicked off the second day of Main Street Days as residents and visitors spent the day looking at vintage cars, checking out local businesses and catching up with old friends.
