The first weekend of the 2009-10 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season resulted in success stories on numerous fronts. As far as the fan base is concerned, the SJHL entertained close to 10,000 through 12 games played with the Flin Flon Bombers leading the way with an announced attendance of 1,401. The Weyburn Red Wings had 1,156 on hand for their home opening win on Saturday, leading the way amongst the Sherwood Conference clubs. Overall, the weekend average was 800. All 12 teams played two games over the course of Friday and Saturday and the La Ronge Ice Wolves, last year's cellar dwellers, were the only club to come away 2-and-0. All 12 teams managed, at least, a single point as the Nipawin Hawks went 0-1-and-1 against the Ice Wolves. In the Sherwood Conference, all six teams went 1-and-1, although Notre Dame leads the way with three points after taking Humboldt to a shootout in both matches. Meanwhile, the SJHL and Access Communications debuted the SJHL Game Of The Week on Live Sports Video Friday night with Yorkton defeating Weyburn 3-1. President Laury Ryan was the first period intermission guest, talking about the evolving changes within the SJHL and the innovative ways the league product continues to market itself. Access 7 did a nice feature on new Battlefords forward Jordan Lane in the second intermission. Weyburn GM Ron Rumball was the guest during the inaugural edition of OVERTIME, the post game show.
