It wasn’t an easy road, but the Creighton Kodiaks girls’ basketball team are repeat Kit Classic champions.
The Kodiaks came away with a hard-fought 43-36 win over the rival Hapnot Kweens in the weekend tournament’s final game.
The Creighton Com-munity School gym was packed for the final. Momentum swung toward each team throughout the matchup and despite a late push by Hapnot, Creighton hung on to win.
Creighton has hosted the Kit Classic in each of the past 10 years, but a tournament victory eluded the Kodiaks until last year. Seven Kodiaks in this year’s tournament were part of last year’s winning team.
Both teams seemed destined to meet in the deciding game, each having won lopsided games on their way to the final. Creighton started their tournament with a 76-30 win over Frontier Collegiate, then added a 69-34 triumph against Naicam.
Hapnot defeated the LP Miller Bears from Nipawin 54-8 before defeating Duck Lake’s Stobart Rebels.
The Kweens will be back in action next weekend, with all four of Hapnot’s junior and senior varsity boys’ and girls’ squads on the court in tournaments.
Both senior teams will play in a pre-zone tournament in The Pas. The JV girls’ side will play at a tournament hosted in Gimli, while the JV Kings will head to Dauphin.
The Kodiaks will not play this weekend, but the girls’ team will compete in a tournament in Meath Park, Sask., on Jan. 27
and 28.
One more high school basketball tournament is scheduled to take place in Flin Flon this year. Hapnot will host two days of games for boys’ and girls’ teams on Feb. 10 and 11.
