National winner to be recognized in the Hockey Hall of Fame & receive $25,000 to benefit a hockey-related cause in their community. Hockey Canada announced earlier this week that it has partnered with RBC Financial Group, hockey commentator Ron MacLean, and the Hockey Hall of Fame in the RBC Local Hockey Leaders program. This new program will recognize and reward those 'behind-the-scenes' individuals who dedicate their time to supporting grassroots hockey in their community, while helping young athletes realize their potential. "We are looking for the tireless hockey volunteers who go beyond the normal call of duty, and inspire others through their dedication and actions. These leaders may coach teams, shovel outdoor rinks, organize fundraising campaigns, or teach hockey and life skills Ð the things that make hockey such an important and accessible part of community life in Canada," says Ron MacLean. "The RBC Local Hockey Leaders program will ensure these tireless individuals are recognized and rewarded for their efforts." Thirteen regional winners will receive $5,000 towards a registered charity/hockey cause in their community, special recognition in the Hockey Hall of Fame and a signed Team Canada jersey. MacLean will personally present one national winner with $25,000 to benefit a hockey-related cause in their community. The national winner will be selected from 13 regional winners (one from each of Hockey Canada's 13 Branches). "Look around your hockey community and nominate the people that most deserve this award, because without these people, hockey simply would not happen,"said Ann Louise Vehovec, Senior Vice-President, RBC Financial Group. "With the help of our partners at Hockey Canada, the Hockey Hall of Fame, and the entire amateur hockey community, we want to make sure these leaders are recognized for the important role they play." "Hockey is a way of life for millions of Canadians involved as volunteers, whether they are coaches, players, officials, administrators or parents," added Bob Nicholson, President, Hockey Canada. "RBC is investing in Canadian communities through this hockey leaders program, and we are proud to be a part of recognizing some of the great people and volunteers at the minor hockey level." A panel including Ron MacLean and Hockey Canada officials will select winners from nominations submitted on the program Web site, www.rbchockeyleaders.com. RBC Local Hockey Leaders are the behind-the-scenes people who make hockey a positive, safe, community-binding and enjoyable activity in their region. Hard work, dependability, enthusiasm and leadership will be considered when evaluating submissions. All nominations will be accepted until midnight (E.S.T.) January 10, 2004.
