The 1999-2000 RBC Financial Group/Canadian junior 'A' player of the year has been voted the Hobey Baker Award winner as the outstanding player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Junior Lessard was presented his trophy April 9. Lessard leads NCAA division I scorers with 32 goals, 14 power-play goals and 63 points in 45 games with the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Lessard completed his four-year career with two goals April 8 as Minnesota-Duluth lost 5-3 to the Denver University Pioneers of the WCHA in an NCAA semi-final. Another Canadian Junior 'A' Hockey League alumnus, Yann Danis, was one of two runners-up for the Hobey Baker Award. Lessard tied for sixth in the NCAA with 31 assists. He played for the Portage Terriers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. The 6', 195 lb Lessard was third in the CJAHL with 60 goals and tied for 12th in the CJAHL with 108 points in 60 regular-season games in 1999-2000. He was voted the MJHL most valuable player, was second in the league with his goal total and was third in the league in scoring. Lessard is a native of St. Joseph de Beauce, Que. He will celebrate his 24th birthday May 26. Danis is second among NCAA goalies with a .942 saves percentage, tied for third in the NCAA with a 1.81 goals against average and tied for fifth in the NCAA with five shutouts in 1,821 minutes with the Brown University Bears of the Eastern College Athletic Conference. The 6', 175 lb Danis played for the Cornwall Colts of the Central Junior Hockey League. Danis recently signed a contract with the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League. He has a .933 saves percentage, 1.50 goals against average, one shutout and a 2-0 won-lost record in 120 minutes with the Hamilton Bulldogs in his first two American Hockey League starts.
