The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association, along with Super 8 Motels and Jostens Canada Ltd are pleased to announce this year's winners of Manitoba High School Athletes of the Year. Through the cooperation of Super 8, we are selecting a male and female in each of our four competition categories to be a recipient of the "Super 8 - Super 8". From these eight finalists (four boys and four girls), the Jostens Manitoba High School female and male Athlete of the Year will be selected. The following are the high school male and female Athlete of the Year finalists: Each of the eight athletes of the year will receive a souvenir watch courtesy of Super 8. 'A' Boys Jesse Penner, of Elm Creek School, participates in hockey, volleyball, badminton, cross country and track & field. He was selected to the zone 4 all-star hockey team, captain of the volleyball team and had tremendous success in zone 4 badminton. He participates in a number of other school and community related activities and his hockey team won the Tournament of Champions in January. 'A' Girls Ferran Cardinal, of Glenboro School, participated in volleyball, basketball, badminton and track & field. She was co-captain of her school basketball team and vice president of Student Council. She officiated volleyball, basketball and baseball games and coached a grade 7 & 8 boys team. Ferran's Panthers won both the Provincial 'A' volleyball and basketball championships and she was selected MVP in both championships. She was also a recipient of the McDonald's BEST basketball scholarship. 'AA' Boys Justin Rosing, of Warren Collegiate, participates in volleyball, track, basketball and cross-country. He had a great basketball season as his team captured the silver medal at the 'AA' Provincials where he was named Most Valuable Player and was also selected as the Players Choice Award recipient. At the Rural Track and Field championships, Justin broke the senior boys hurdle record with a time of 13.66 seconds. At the recent McDonald's Track and Field Championships, Justin led his Wildcats to the senior boys team title, after capturing a gold in the 200m, silver in the 100m and bronze in the 400m. 'AA' Girls Rachael Oliver, of Carberry Collegiate, participates in volleyball, basketball and fastball. She was captain of all three teams and participated in the Graduating Basketball All-Star game. Rachel also participates in many community sports and was selected as an MHSAA athlete of the week. Rachel also was a member of the provincial juvenile girls basketball team last summer. 'AAA' Boys Glen Pauch, of Portage Collegiate, participates in basketball, volleyball soccer, curling, track and cross-country. Glen was selected as the MVP of the Provincial 'AAA'? Volleyball Provincials, which his team won, All-Star at the 'AAA' Basketball Provincials in Flin Flon and received many All-Star and MVP selections at tournaments throughout the year. Captain of the volleyball, basketball and soccer teams, Glen was also selected as a Graduating All-Star in both volleyball and basketball. He is also chairperson of the spirit committee and freshie committee and coaches a junior high school girls soccer team. 'AAA' Girls Jayme Menzies, of Neelin High School in Brandon, added two provincial championships to her name this year, capturing both the 'AAA' Volleyball and Basketball championships. She was selected MVP at the volleyball championships and to the MVA Graduating All-Star game. Jayme was also MVP at the basketball championships, selected to the Graduating All-Star team and the All Manitoba team. She participates in choir and coaches basketball for junior high. See 'Basketball' P.# Con't from P.# 'AAAA' Boys Ian Milne, of Garden Valley Collegiate in Winkler, was ranked #2 basketball player and #9 ranked volleyball player in the province. During the year, Ian captured several all-star selections at tournaments and led his Zodiaks to the Provincial 'AAAA' Basketball final, with 36 points where they were silver medallists. This is the first time that a Winkler team has accomplished this feat. As the Volleyball team captain, Ian led the team in kills, blocks and service aces. Captain of the basketball team, he was the teams top scorer and re-bounder as well as a Provincial All-Star. He participates in band and choir and is a minor basketball referee. 'AAAA' Girls Sabrina Barnes, of Oak Park High School, participates in volleyball, basketball and badminton. She was ranked as the #2 high school volleyball player and #8 basketball player in Manitoba, and named to the Graduating All-Star Team in both those sports. Her Oak Park Raiders captured the Provincial Basketball title and took home silver at the volleyball championships, and she was selected as an All-Star in five other tournaments. Sabrina contributed as a coach with a Grade 7 Girls Volleyball Team at Riverpark West Elementary School. Jostens Athletes of the Year The Jostens Male and Female High School Athletes of the Year are Ian Milne of the Garden Valley Zodiaks from Winkler, and Sabrina Barnes of the Oak Park Raiders in Winnipeg. Each of these athletes will receive an attractive plaque and ring courtesy of Jostens.
