Nearly 400 people were on the bandwagon for the health challenge last year and the Flin Flon and Creighton in motion committee hopes to see even more this time. In tune with the 2010 Olympics, the upcoming health challenge will be geared towards team activities. Though still promoting overall wellness and good health, the revamped challenge will bring out a little bit more competitiveness. Last year, the "ticky sheet," as it became known, was the main objective in the challenge. Giving yourself daily marks for things like eating healthy, drinking six to eight cups of water a day, exercising for 30 minutes a day, eating fruits, vegetables and fish and attempting to get seven to eight hours of sleep a night, was how teams climbed to the top of the charts. This year, the sheet still remains, but there are also extra point challenges. Teams, between four and 10 players, are encouraged to participate in the activities as they give their team a few extra points Ð which could put them in the driver's seat of the challenge. One of the extra points challenges is a BINGO Ð created with ways to keep healthy. The BINGO is completed by a team with items such as 'learn a new word and use it in a sentence' and 'do 15 minutes of light cleaning today.' As well as the BINGO, there is a Shop Like A Champion exercise. With clues in hand, teams are required Ð on their own time Ð to conduct a scavenger hunt about the nutritional facts of food as well as walking around stores and taking notice of items. Doing this activity, the competitors will be able to learn more about the food they are consuming. On the physical side of the game, teams are encouraged to enter the Smooshing challenge, which takes place during the Bust the Winter Blues Festival in February. And to round out the extra points activities, there will be a healthy Jeopardy! challenge at the closing ceremonies in March. The challenge begins in January and runs for six weeks with three prizes available. The team that finishes first will receive $1,000 with Silver and Bronze in motion prize packages available. A $5 fee for each player is required to enter the challenge. Last year, teams were made up through workplaces. This year, the challenge is open to the community but can still be done through the workplace. Teams are encouraged to create a country for their team names to keep in theme with the Olympics. Names like Team Canada will not be accepted, so the committee is hoping to see some creative countries. Rules for the challenge are as follows: 1. Form your health challenge team. Teams can consist of a minimum of four players up to a maximum of 10 players. 2. Choose your captain. Team captains will be responsible for motivating the team, collecting the fees, forwarding weekly team points and promoting the "extra" points opportunities to team members. 3. Choose your team name. To keep in the spirit of the 2010 Winter Olympics, we have decided that team names will have a "country" theme. We are asking that all teams make up a fun "country" name. No real countries please Ð names such as Team Canada or Team Sweden will not be accepted. 4. Register by January 8 by calling Fran Labarre, Community in motion committee, at 687-1355, or e-mail your registration form to [email protected] or fax it to 687-8602. 5. Collect your team fees and forward to the in motion committee no later than January 29, or your team will be disqualified. For more information, contact one of the in motion committee members Ð Aimee Deans, Fran Labarre, Channa Senyk, Christa McIntyre, Niki Stenerson, Billy Williamson, Joanna Ledoux or Kelly Carrington.
