Mine rescue workers from HBMS Flin Flon took first place in the 2010 Provincial Mine Rescue Competition. Held in Winnipeg last weekend at the Union Centre and parkade, the team of six earned the top score overall in five events. The team, made up of Tom Lindsay, Ian Cooper, Superintendent Health and Safety, Tracey Knutson, Bob Lyons, Don Peake, Olaf Hettrick, Dale Holmgren, Trevor Thurston, Cpt. Don Last and Director of Operations Richard Trudeau, competed in life-like challenges against five other teams. Out of the five challenges, HBMS Flin Flon received the top score, with the second highest score going to AECL-URL out of Pinawa, MB. In the competition, teams were required to complete the following events: Smoke and foam problem Challengers were required to solve a problem in a parkade with zero visibility while working through smoke and firefighter foam, and then reporting back to the Director of Operations. Practical Skills Teams had to build two timber sets and install a door between the two of them. First Aid Challenge Teams had to work together on a simulated forklift accident. With a fallen tire on a dummy, with injuries to his leg and spinal injuries to the driver, the teams had to perform First Aid. Firefighting Challenge Each team member had to extinguish two simulated fires. Rather than creating real fires in downtown Winnipeg, challengers had to take down the two fires with lasers in a virtual simulation. Exam Each participant was required to complete a hand-written exam on standard procedures as well as a hands-on test to get their breathing apparatus and equipment ready for use. Judging for the events is done by mine inspectors from Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
