The Melfort Mustangs shocked the Nipawin Hawks on Sunday night, beating them 6-1 to win the ITECH Conference elimination series 4-2. Kurtis Astle was the story of the game, scoring three times to lead the attack. Also scoring for Melfort were Matt Fennell, Nathan Brummitt and Tyler Shewchuk. Astle's hat trick gives him seven goals in the series. Ryan Cruse had the lone goal for the Hawks, who are the first team to be eliminated from this year's SJHL playoffs. The Humboldt Broncos avoided elimination with a 4-3 overtime win over the Weyburn Red Wings. Kevin Duchaine was the overtime hero, scoring at 4:42 of double-OT. Brady Heintz, Jason Miller and Jeremy McKibbon scored for the Broncos in regulation. Peter MacDougall, Kent Lillejord and Cody Wasik had the goals for the Red Wings, who out shot the Broncos 56-20 according to the game sheet. Game seven will be played tonight in Humboldt. In the ITECH selection series, the Battlefords North Stars finished the round robin with a 7-5 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves to clinch second place. The Wolves finished in top spot despite the loss, and will now pick their opponent for the next round. Dylan Wiltermuth had a pair of goals for the Stars to lead the way, including the game winner. Darren Delainey also had a pair, while Adam Vetter, Shane Cusack and Derek Keller added singles. Kris Desjarlais and Jeff Marshall each scored twice for the Wolves, and Cody Pedersen added the single. The second round of the playoffs begins on Friday.
