The Humboldt Broncos are showing no signs of slowing down, but several teams are starting to show that they are more than capable of taking the SJHL's top spot if they should stumble. For the second straight week, the Canadian Junior "A" Hockey League has ranked the Broncos as the number one team in Canada. They only played twice over the last week taking three out of a possible four points as they beat Nipawin while losing in a shootout to the Battlefords. The hottest team in the league over the past week may be the Melfort Mustangs. The Mustangs won three of four games with all three coming on the road. The wins in Estevan, Weyburn and Notre Dame have Coach Darrell Mann feeling very good. He said it says something about his team when they can go into some tough buildings in the other conference and get positive results in what were three very tough hockey games. The Mustangs haven't taken on Humboldt in regular season play, but Mann feels his team can compete with the Broncos and he is looking forward to taking them on later this month in a home and home series. One of the reasons for the optimism in Melfort is the play of Charles Corsi. The 20 year old goaltender came to Melfort just after the regular season started and Mann says he has been a blessing. "Unbelievable," Mann says. "He has given us so much confidence. He reminds us of Grant Fuhr. He's the type of guy that maybe isn't the best goalie in the league, but he is a guy that you know isn't going to let the next goal in and allows us to battle back and be successful in one goal hockey games." The La Ronge Ice Wolves are also on fire right now. Like the Mustangs, the Ice Wolves won three straight on the road as they beat the Mustangs in Melfort along with taking out both Melville and Yorkton. La Ronge has only played nine games, but they have won six of them and with the arrival of Logan Herauf, they have gained a lot offensively as he has contributed with five points in his first six games. While Melfort and La Ronge are hot right now, the Yorkton Terriers have gone cold. The Terriers were the number five ranked team in Canada, but losses at home to Weyburn, Estevan and the Ice Wolves have cooled the Terriers off. They are now ready to go on a nine game road trip that will test their mettle as they try and stay atop the Sherwood Conference.
