Hapnot Collegiate will be taking a strong contingent of seven wrestlers to the Provincial Championships in March, after a strong showing at the Zone 11 Championships February 13 and 14 in the Pas. Provincials will be held in Winnipeg, March 12 and 13. Eric Skeavington will be wrestling in the junior high category at provincials. Eric has been training with Hapnot for the entire season, and accompanied the team to the Zone 11 Championships. Skeavington wrestled in a category with five other kids, winning his category in the junior division. After his matches, Hapnot coach Craig McIntosh set up an exhibition match with the winner of the same weight category from the senior division, which Skeavington also won. "This kid is going to be very good," said McIntosh. "He's been coming to all the practices and made friends with the high school kids. He's really bought into the program, which is really nice to see." McIntosh hopes that next year, more junior high kids will want to train with the high school wrestlers, giving them some exposure to the sport at a higher level, and a desire to learn more. That would give the young wrestlers five or six years of training at the high school level. Also at Zones, Erik Kendrick was a gold medalist in the 88 kg class, beating out four other kids in his category. Brittany Brown also won her weight category, 55 kg, Cody Rice, who was a first-time wrestler, managed a bronze medal in the 58 kg class. Gordon French and the Ricard brothers all wrestled in a competitive category against 13 wrestlers, with Tyler Ricard having the highest finish of the three. They all finished in the top half of the class. Kari Kreiger, Gordon French, Tyler Ricard, Adam Ricard and Ethan Kendrick will be accompanying the team to Provincials, which will be held at J.H. Bruns High School on Lakewood Boulevard in Winnipeg.
