It's a rebuilding year for both Hapnot Collegiate volleyball teams, but the Kopper Kings are still striving for zone supremacy. Kopper Kings coach, Mike Nychuk, says he has a good team, but took a blow when his setter graduated. This doesn't worry the Kopper Kings coach who claims to have strong returning players who should provide support for new setter Chad Ticzon. "We're going to win zones," Nychuk says confidently. "Hopefully we''ll take it from Thompson." Ian Clark,17, who plays the power position backed up those comments as he believes the team will be good because of the veteran presence. "It's a building year with players coming from the junior varsity program," he added. Despite what the team will endure, he also believes the team will claim zones over Thompson. When discussing Ticzon at the setter position, Clark and teammate Jake Rogers didn't express doubt. "It's the toughest position," explains Rogers,"and it's his first year playing." If that winds up being the Kopper Kings' main concern, it may disappear as the rookie adjusts to the higher level of action. As for the Kopper Kweens, they started tryouts last Wednesday and coach Ken Kittle likes what he sees in his team. "It's a young team," he says. "It's a rebuilding year and things look positive as we have some good talent coming up." With up to four players returning from last year, the Kopper Kweens coach expects his team to be competitive and have fun. "I'm excited about the coming season," says Kittle, who has been coaching the Kopper Kweens for two years. "I'm excited to be able to rebuild the team." This is because Kittle has the luxury of choosing 12 players in a group of over 20 girls. The Kopper Kweens coach anticipates to have his roster set by Sept. 9 or 12. To help strengthen his team, Kittle is setting up games every Thursday night at 8:30 against senior ladies who are interested in playing against them, or they can come out to watch. This is scheduled to begin in a few weeks.
