Hapnot Volleyball teams recently participated in the Zone 11 Championships. Junior Varsity teams were in Thompson on November 7 and 8. On the boys side, RDPC (Thompson), Hapnot, Norway House, MBCI (The Pas) and Cross Lake played a full round robin, with the top four teams advancing to the play offs. Hapnot split with Norway House, but ran into some tough offence from Thompson and lost both games against RDPC. Hapnot couldn't get their momentum back in their third set, and lost both games to Cross Lake. On Saturday morning, Hapnot needed to beat MBCI two games straight in order to qualify for the playoffs, and they did. Hapnot ended up matched against Thompson for the semifinals. The Flin Flon team came out hard, taking a 6-0 lead, but Thompson took advantage of a pair of good servers, who gave Hapnot a lot of trouble. RDPC won the first game 25-18, and stole the second game 25-12. Thompson would go on to win the tournament. "We did a lot of good things on defence against Thompson," said coach Don Bodnarus. "We were digging a lot of tough balls. We just didn't have the offensive power to beat them." Hapnot's boys are looking forward to next season, as this year's squad was made up of all first-year players. In girls action, eight teams were split into two pools. Hapnot was in tough against RDPC, Joe A. Ross (OCN) and Split Lake, and did not advance out of their pool. The Senior Boys and Girls teams were in Thompson this past weekend, and both teams went through the round robin to advance to the finals against Thompson. The Kweens' season ended with a loss to Thompson in the finals. The Kings defeated Thompson in the round robin to finish first place in the pool, but would eventually lose to RDPC in the finals. The Kings are currently in the process of applying for a wild card berth to Provincials next weekend. "There are three wild card spots this year, so the team can go down south and compete against the top ten teams in the province," said coach Craig McIntosh. "We've had success against a lot of the teams that are ranked in the top ten right now, and we feel that it is a good opportunity for our players." It is also a good opportunity for hitter Scott LeMaistre, who is being scouted by some of the universities in the country. Hapnot should find out about the wild card spot by Monday.
