Neither of Hapnot Collegiate's senior varsity volleyball teams got the results they desired during a tournament in Brandon last weekend. Despite that, both still managed some positives. Kopper Kweens co-coach Tiffany Anderson liked the team work the Kweens displayed as she said it "was the best positive from the weekend." Anderson also felt that Jacquelyn Spence put up fabulous blocks against Thompson as that was something they needed. The Kopper Kweens managed to win just one set out of 12, but their game turned around against Goose Lake and rival RD Parker. "In three games we were just outplayed," said Anderson. "We played really well against RD Parker and I hate making excuses, but one of our starters had the flu." She said one of the big concerns going in to Zones was knowing if they will be able to beat their rival. After seeing what the team did against RD Parker (losing 20-25 and 23-25), Anderson feels confident they will get the desired results. The coaching staff told its players that the last win was better as the team communicated well and worked with the setter. "It was good to watch," Anderson said. "I hope they're peaking at the right time. The group worked as a team." Kopper Kween Jacquelyn Spence felt the team went down south to get better and accomplished that and is encouraged with the results. "I think we gave them (RD Parker) a run for their money," Jacquelyn said. Kopper Kings Coach Craig McIntosh was disappointed that his team was waiting for Peter Weber and Evan Renard to step up and score. "The team sat back and waited for something good," McIntosh said. "They have confidence in two players to get back in, but we need it in everyone." After working on their middle game prior to the tournament, McIntosh sees slow improvement. The one area during the tournament he was happy with was the play from his his non-starters. "The bench kids were great," he said. "They did good things on the floor and played their roles." Junior Varsity The Kopper Kweens and Kings seasons are now finished after participating in Zones. The Kweens lost in the final against RD Parker and couldn't overcome a 30-29 loss to pull things together in the second set. "After losing the first game, the girls were in tears and lost the next game badly," coach Rob Abbott said. "It was a tough loss. I think we were the best team that lost." The Kings lost in semi-final action against Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute in three sets. They won the first 25-20, then lost 25-18 and 15-11.
