Hapnot Collegiate is looking to have a banner year in track and field, thanks to renewed interest in the sport resulting in a large number of participants. "We're very excited about our track program this year," said coach Craig McIntosh. "We have more athletes participating than every before, both in junior varsity and senior." Close to 30 senior athletes and 25 junior athletes have been practicing regularly. "We would like to see the grades 9 and 10 athletes coming out a bit more," said McIntosh. "Sometimes they are a bit shit about coming out in their first year, but we try to get as many as we can. Our seniors that have been around for three or four years are very strong this year." For the first time, Hapnot has enough athletes participating at the zone tournament to be in contention for the Zone 11 banner. "Usually Thompson takes it based on sheer numbers," said McIntosh. "They pack every event. This year, we are able to have at least two athletes in every event. That's something we've never been able to do in the past. As a coach, it's great to have all these kids out." Other coaches include Graham Garrett (jumping), Don Bodnarus (running and throwing) and Steve Killick (throwing). Killick graduated from Hapnot last year, and has been throwing for the University of Saskatchewan. For Hapnot students hoping to do well at Zones, they will be held in The Pas on May 28 and 29. Provincials will be in Brandon the following weekend. Athletes finishing in the top two at zones, or who beat provincial standards, are eligible to compete at the Provincial Championships. Hapnot will be taking two busses to Zones in The Pas for the first time ever. The hurdlers and 1,500 metre runners will be competing on Friday, May 28, while the rest of the events will take place on Saturday, May 29. Hapnot will return on the Saturday night, hopefully with a banner in tow.5/20/2004
