The track at Foster Park has been getting a good workout lately as the Hapnot Collegiate Track and Field team has been out practicing for the last three weeks. Nearly 90 students signed up for the sport to participate in either running, throwing, jumping or a combination of the three. Megan Strachan, the hurdle coach with the Hapnot team, says it's great to see that many students interested. "I know it's a high number...and it will filter down and we will probably take about 65 to Zones," says the first-time track coach. With the track season being as short as it is, the Zones take place on May 22 and 23 in The Pas. Athletes who qualify from there will compete in Dauphin for the Rural Provincials, which is the weekend following The Pas. And from there, athletes who again qualify compete in City Provincials, which take place the weekend after in Winnipeg. As a first time coach for track and field, Strachan says things are going "really good" and she "enjoys it all." Taking a step back and looking at the sport, Strachan says track and field is a building block when it comes to other sports. The season itself lasts approximately a month and a half and the athletes from Hapnot Collegiate get in every minute of practice they can. The students can be found between the field at the school and Foster Park working on their throwing, running and jumping skills. Also putting their names down for coaching this year are Craig MacIntosh (sprint and relay), Don Bodnaraus (throwing), Neil Leifso (jumping) and Jake Rogers (long and triple jump). All athletes are eligible to compete in three events plus a relay event.
