Five Hapnot volleyball teams were on the road this past weekend. The boys and girls senior teams were just down the #10 Highway in Cranberry Portage, while one boys and two girls junior teams took the long road to Thompson. The Hapnot Kings senior boys were the most successful group, easily winning the tournament in Cranberry Portage, not losing a single set. They met up with the host team from Cranberry Portage in the final. The round robin game against Cranberry was close, but in the final, Flin Flon led from start to finish. The senior girls also competed hard, but lost in the semifinals to Cranberry Portage. "Jake Rogers was our tournament MVP," said coach Mike Nychuk. "He played very well, and the rest of the guys really pulled it together and played as a team." The Kweens went through the round robin in first place after splitting with Cranberry Portage in their first game. These two teams have battled all season, and Cranberry Portage went on to win the tournament. This weekend will be a test for both the girls and boys teams, as they will be in Brandon for a 40-team tournament. All of the ranked teams in the province will be there, and this will be the first real challenge the Kings have faced all year. The Kings are currently ranked ninth in the province in 'AAA' basketball standings, and are looking to bring the zone championship banner back to Flin Flon. In Thompson, the junior varsity boys played hard, but lost out in the semifinals. Playing in a difficult pool, the JV boys were tested from the opening serve. Their first game of the weekend was against Creighton, who went on to win the tournament, including both games against Hapnot. The JV boys rebounded with a strong game against Gilliam's senior team, splitting the sets with them. In their third game, the boys found themselves in a packed gym against the host from Thompson. Hapnot was fired up and ready to play, and won both sets. On Saturday, Hapnot had to get through Waboden's senior team to advance to the finals, where they fell short, ending their weekend and a chance to play Creighton in the finals. The junior varsity girls took over 20 players down, dividing them into two teams. Unfortunately, this prevented them from putting their strongest team on the court, and neither team made it to the playoff round. This weekend, the Junior Varsity Zone 11 Volleyball Championships will be held in Flin Flon. Seven girls and seven boys teams are slated to compete. In the girls competition, all games will be played at Hapnot Collegiate. Hapnot will be in Pool A with Frontier Collegiate from Cranberry Portage (FCI), Norway House High School (NHHS) and Otter Nelson Reserve (ONR) from Cross Lake. Pool B will have R.D. Parker Collegiate from Thompson (RDPC), Margaret Barbour Collegiate (MBCI) from The Pas and Pukatawagan. Hapnot will play round robin games at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, and will finish at 10 a.m. on Saturday. See 'Finds P.# Con't from P.# The playoff round begins at 11 a.m., and the finals will be at 3 p.m. In the boys tournament, Hapnot will be in Pool A with ONR, MBCI and Pukatawagan. Pool B will have RDPC, FCI and NHHS. The Hapnot boys will also play their round robin games at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. on Saturday. The playoff round begins at 11 a.m. All boys games will be played at the McIsaac School Gymnasium, except the finals, which will be played at Hapnot at 4 p.m.
