It was no surprise to the athletes, teachers and families as five names were called out for the biggest awards of the evening at Hapnot Collegiate’s Athletic Banquet.
Devon Puchailo was named Senior Varsity Sportsman of the Year as former Hapnot principal Glenn Smith, for whom the award is named, presented it to him Tuesday evening in the school gymnasium.
Sierra Kopachinski and Candace Whitford shared the title of Senior Varsity Sportswoman of the Year, also presented by and named after Smith.
Hasana Church and Eric Rutherford earned this year’s Junior Varsity Sportswoman and Sportsman titles of the year, respectively.
Also during the banquet, 17 teams were called to the stage for season awards.
Coaches gave overviews of the season from golf to track and field as well as the eight zone banners that Hapnot won this year.
The girls’ soccer team brought home their ninth consecutive zone banner under the direction of Dean Grove, Laura Sparling, Kate Starkey and Tim Davis.
Heartwarming
Boys’ soccer coach Tyler Kittle shared a heartwarming story of the pride he felt from his team during a match against Dauphin.
Dauphin’s team had a special needs player who spent the majority of the time on the sidelines but was sent in during the last moments of the game.
The Kings were ahead in the game and made a unanimous decision to set up the player from Dauphin for a goal.
With a wide open net, a King left the ball in plain sight for the special needs player to take his shot.
Unfortunately, Kittle told the crowd Tuesday evening, another player from Dauphin took the shot and scored the goal.
Before he realized what the players were doing, Kittle admits he was thrown off and nervous for the boys’ sanity.
After the game was over, Kittle says he was taken aback. But the boys wanted to make sure that player had his moment of glory, the proud coach said.
“And that’s what sportsmanship is,” Kittle said.
Another big moment in Hapnot sports happened off the field when the girls’ soccer club was able to attend a World Cup game in Winnipeg on June 12.
Coach Grove says it was an experience none of them will soon forget.
Athletes were also presented with Minor and Major awards based on points accumulated throughout their time at Hapnot.
Points are totalled and broken into categories of Minor with at least 75 points, Major with at least 180 points and Double Major with at least 360 points.
