Young runners flew through the Flin Flon Ski Club trails earlier this week, as Hapnot Collegiate hosted cross-country zones for MHSAA Zone 11 athletes at the ski club.

Athletes travelled from as far away as Oxford House, Leaf Rapids and St. Theresa Point for the competition, held on Monday, Oct. 5.

While keeping up their speed, the runners needed to navigate through the challenging tree-lined course, maneuvering around hilly areas and muddy spots.

“All the kids did well,” said coach Brett Unrau, who noted that while the cross-country team has a short season, for many students the team is an ideal way to stay in shape for other sports.

Hapnot runners performed well; notably, Grade 10 student Hanna Baynton won in the JV girls category, and Carson Lee, a Grade 9 student, won in the JV boys.

Elementary schools were also invited to take part in the race; grades 5 to 8 students from Ruth Betts Community School, Creighton Community School, École Mcissac School, MBCI (The Pas) and NDKMS (Pelican Rapids) participated in this portion of the event.

“The strong representation from the middle schools in Flin Flon and Creighton was awesome,” remarked coach Amy Olenick.
