Hapnot Collegiate's track and field team won its first ever Zone 11 championship, at least that's what coach Steve Lytwyn said he believes. "Some people say it's been 30 years," Lytwyn said. "I'm not sure if it's ever happened." If that's the case, it has now. "Everything came together at the right time," he said with a smile. "Last year we were six points off and this year to come off and win Ð it was awesome." They didn't just win, they did it in convincing fashion Ð by 99 points. "I thought it would be very, very close," Lytwyn said smiling, as he leaned back on his chair. Lytwyn feels very good about the victory, but he's happy for his athletes, especially the core of Grade 12s. "It's awesome for them to win in their last year," he stated. One of those to bask in the Zone championship is Andrea Stelnicki. "I won the hurdles," she said proudly with a huge smile. "I told Mr. Lytwyn I was going to win the hurdles, though I'm not sure if he remembers." She's very happy not to be eating her own words. What makes it more enjoyable is the fact she placed fourth in the competition last year. Andrea said it helped to have a real hurdles coach in Tammy Cool from Creighton Community School. "We probably couldn't have done it without her," she said. Another who did well was Lyle Leclair, who won three of his four events Ð placing second in one. "I was kind of surprised," Lyle said. "I didn't expect to do that good, but I'm happy about it." The Grade 10 student was one who impressed Lytwyn. "He did a phenomenal job," the second year coach stated. While most of the credit goes to each athlete, Lytwyn's decision making also helped turn their fortunes around. Lytwyn said that he's learned from his own mistakes by placing the students in events that better suit them, because nothing else has changed. Now the team prepares for provincials this weekend in Selkirk, with City competition taking place in Winnipeg the following weekend.
