Birdies were being smacked around Hapnot Collegiate gym during a recent badminton tournament. Singles action kicked off on Friday afternoon and ended with doubles on Saturday. Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute's (The Pas) Kim Berscheid and Jordan Hanratty defeated Hapnot's Jake Rogers and Alex Davis 2-0 in the best of three championship game. "They were a good team," Jake said. "Normally when you play mixed, there is a weaker player." Jake said Kim and Jordan could play the birdie from anywhere. The duo also had the ability to clear and smash. "I thought it was really good," Alex said. "It was really hard. Me and Jake really tried our best. "I know they played before in a lot of tournaments," she said about Kim and Jordan. "They work well together. I think we played pretty good for our first time." For the JV side, Hapnot's Riley Bergen and Justine Rodnisky defeated MBCI's Paige Fleury and Brett Janz 2-0. "She was a pretty tough one," Riley said. "They played hard. It was just always back and forth and I played him (Brett) before in the singles and I knew his weakness and we got it down on him." Riley and Justine also had never played together. It was quick success for the duo who credited each others play. "She was awesome," Riley said. Justine felt that Riley held the fort. "I have no clue," Justine replied on why they have chemistry. "We're both good at badminton and we played hard." She felt the competition was tough and her sentiments were the same as others who said the level of play was good. This tournament was the first one held at Hapnot, as players began practicing a week before spring break. The other school participating was Joe A. Ross.
