Greens in top-notch condition, lots of play left

There is still plenty of golf left to be played at the Phantom Lake Golf Course. Golf pro Chris Doyle says the greens are in the best shape of the year. “The course is in excellent condition,” said Doyle, in his second season at PLGC.

There is still plenty of golf left to be played at the Phantom Lake Golf Course.

Golf pro Chris Doyle says the greens are in the best shape of the year.

“The course is in excellent condition,” said Doyle, in his second season at PLGC. “Come on out and enjoy the last part of the season.”

The greens opened on May 10 and will continue to be open the remainder of this month.

The annual Closing Day Tournament will be held on Sept. 20.

Doyle says the course will remain open afterwards, but with limited hours. The course will still be available for play as late as Oct. 10 as winterization will begin Oct. 15.

To date, Doyle says its “been a very good season.”

The weather has been largely favourable to golfers this season. Only once was the course forced to close due to rain.

On average, said Doyle, the club saw between 280-320 golfers in a day.

“The course has been well played, and the restaurant has been well attended,” he said.

The PLGC also saw a big increase in its junior program this year. Last year, the club had 45 juniors interested in the sport. This year, Doyle says 60 came out to the sessions.

“Every Monday that they aren’t in school they spend an hour in lessons at the course,” said Doyle.

Improvements

Two holes received facelifts at the PLGC this season. On Hole 5, the club put in a pond to make it a little more challenging.

Doyle says the addition of the pond will also help dry out the fairways. And, on Hole 8, the club extended a pond.

“It’s just a beautiful hole now,” he said.

The rebuild of the hole as well as the expansion of the pond will allow for better drainage.

It wasn’t just the course itself that saw improvements this season. The clubhouse opened its doors for Wednesday night buffets – for golfers and non-golfers. Doyle says the evenings were always a hit. “There was a lot more interest,” he said.

“The staff has done a phenomenal job. People really feel comfortable.”

More to come

The PLGC has had a busy season with its annual tournaments.

Doyle says there is a still lot of golf to come. Next up, the club will host a mixed twilight tournament as well as a night golf on Sept. 13.

And it will be a busy morning, as the Flin Flon Bombers will host their annual Bomber Golf Tournament that day.
