Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The latest dumping of snow has put a damper on the greens, but Phantom Lake Golf Club pro John Irwin hopes to have the course open in two or three weeks. Though the Flin Flon area got roughly 25 centimetres of snow over the Easter weekend, Irwin is optimistic the course will be open if not by the end of April than a few days later. Last year, the greens opened around May 14. The PLGC is shooting for an earlier date this year, but it all comes down to the weather. 'This latest weather has set us back a little bit. but hopefully not much longer,' said Irwin. Next week the weather is expected to reach above 10 degrees, which will help the snow melt. However the -10 weather overnight is keeping the snow around longer. 'We just need it to melt,' said Irwin. As for members walking through the door, last year the club saw between 380 and 400. 'If we got in the vicinity of 400, that would be pretty good,' said Irwin. 'The course is in good shape and it's early spring. Hopefully the membership will be strong.' New ideas A new board of directors means new ideas for the PLGC. This year Shawn Nabe has taken on the role of club president. 'They've got some new ideas and hopefully things will go well this year,' said Irwin, who hopes some of those ideas come to fruition. Like the start of a baseball season, Irwin says everyone is optimistic about the start of the season. 'We just need the weather,' he said. Irwin just arrived back in the Flin Flon area, to the snow, after wintering in South Carolina and Florida. He's looking forward to the start of his second season at Phantom Lake.
