Since taking up volleyball four years ago, Tyler Williamson has continuously strived to get better.

That dedication has paid off as the Creighton teen captains the Under-17 University of Saskatchewan Huskies at this week’s Volleyball Canada national championships.

“This has been a great opportunity and has opened a lot of doors,” said Williamson, a Grade 12 student at Creighton Community School. “I’ve improved as a player and learned commitment and dedication at the next level.”

The Huskies are among 48 teams competing in the championships in cities across Canada. They were scheduled to begin play Friday morning in Saskatoon. Play wraps up Sunday.

Williamson, who plays middle, tried out for the club in Saskatoon last December and was chosen to join the roster of 14. He travelled to Saskatoon every weekend to practice with his teammates while hitting the gym and eating healthy during the week.

He took up the sport in Grade 8 and has been part of U of S Huskies summer camps since Grade 10. He also attended the team’s prospects camp.

Williamson has received a few individual awards for being the most dedicated player, but most of his success in volleyball has come in the form of team honours, first as a member of the Creighton Kodiaks and then as a Husky.

After graduating from high school this June, he plans to continue with volleyball when he begins his post-secondary studies this fall. He plans to become an RCMP officer.
