Golfers are practicing their swing this morning in preparation for their shot at a million dollars. The Million Dollar Hole in One contest gets started tomorrow at the Phantom Lake Driving Range. With money being raised for the Tri-Services Club, Maureen Kozar of CFAR, which is promoting the event, says it is a great way to support the community. ÒI think itÕs wonderful. The community seems to love it and lots of people participate,Ó says Kozar. ÒThe money raised goes to fixing something in our community, so it stays.Ó In the past, money has been given to the Lions Handi-van and helped to spruce up the walking trail at Creekside. This year, funds will be helping to replace the boards on FlintyÕs Boardwalk. For those participating this year, the range is open Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m.; Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with the semi-finals and finals being held. The Million Dollar Hole in One will see people of all ages trying their luck. SundayÕs semi-finals will offer competitors a chance at the finals. From there, the top competitors from Flin Flon, Thompson and The Pas take part in the Northern Finals for their chance to go to Nationals in Whistler, B.C. With the top leader heading to the Nationals, the other two compete in Provincials in Saskatoon, with a chance at making it to Nationals as well. Last year Darcy Salamondra of Flin Flon made his way to Nationals. ÒYou never know, someone could win (the) million dollars here in Flin Flon,Ó says Kozar, noting that it hasnÕt been won in the city before. It isnÕt only the Western provinces that participate in the event. ÒThe event is done all over the world...with different people at different areas,Ó Kozar says. With all ages able to compete in the Million Dollar Hole in One, Kozar says there are a number of juniors and ladies who participate, but because the event doesnÕt attract as many of them, separate leader boards are created. ÒThe juniors and the ladies can make the regular board, but itÕs just an extra,Ó she says.
