Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Golfing has never been so fun. And the golfers (and non-golfers) who hit the links earlier this month found out why. In an effort to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society, the Phantom Lake Golf Course played host to Golf for the Cure on July 10. Flin Flon's Golf for the Cure raised over $5,000. Brenda Russell, event coordinator for the Golf for the Cure committee, says things couldn't have been better. "It went really well and we were really pleased for the first time doing the event," said Russell. In a first for Flin Flon, 34 golfers were out for the rainy Sunday afternoon event. "People had fun and they enjoyed the whole event," said Russell, adding that she heard plenty of positive comments following the day. The Canadian Cancer Society will send a cheque back to Flin Flon with the total amount to be spent locally on cancer-related projects. Originally, the committee was able to choose one of two options Ð spending the money nationally on breast cancer research, or spending it locally. Though there are no concrete decisions on where to put the money, to date, Russell says it will stay in the community. With rain and some sun throughout the day, Russell says the Golf for the Cure was a blast. "We're happy with the numbers for the first year. We hope to get more next year," says the event coordinator. Interest Russell hopes that with the event now established, word will pass on and spark interest in new participants for next year. Taking the weather and the fact that it's summer into consideration, Russell says there may be a change in the format to accommodate people next year. But for this year, she says the event wouldn't have been possible without the support of the community. Along with the round of golf, contests were put on throughout the day. Golfers were eligible to participate in the closest to the pin contest as well as the Babes of the Beach. Those who spent the most amount of time in the bunkers were presented with sashes and crowns as well as a a beach bag. "A good time was had by all to help out a serious cause and we look forward to next year's event," said Russell, noting that the weather didn't slow the golfers down.
