The reigning provincial champion Golden Gals rink, consisting of skip Lorna Rice, third Denise Davis, second Edna Smith and lead Dela Chilson, is one of two rinks from Flin Flon heading to Golden Gals provincials in Virden this weekend.

Two curling teams from Flin Flon, including the reigning Manitoba provincial champions, will head to the Virden Curling Club for the upcoming Manitoba Golden Gals provincial curling championship from Nov. 30-Dec. 2.

The first rink, consisting of skip Lorna Rice, lead Dela Chilson, second Edna Smith and third Denise Davis, won last year’s Golden Gals provincial championship, held in Flin Flon in the winter of 2022. The Rice rink has qualifed automatically for this year’s tournament, getting a chance to reclaim their title.

A second rink from Flin Flon will also head down for the event, skipped by Debbie McNeill and consisting of lead Shirley Miller, second Yvonne Davis and third Sandra Chatfield. Both teams will enter the event representing Flin Flon’s Uptown Curling Club.

In total, 16 teams will hit the ice in Virden for the tournament, which is for female curlers age 60 and over, with an exception for one player per rink to be over the age of 55.

Originally, according to the Golden Gals Provincial Curling Association, provincials in Flin Flon last year were supposed to be cancelled, but 12 rinks came to play in Flin Flon last year for provincial glory anyway. In the final, the Rice rink beat Norma Johnson’s team from Dauphin to claim the provincial title. Another rink, skipped by Sue Chrisp, finished fourth at the event.
