Creighton Kodiak's wrestler Mike Sutherland got an eye-opening experience during provincials in Saskatoon. "I think they (competition) were pretty good," Mike said. "The first guy I wrestled was pretty strong." One of the problems he admits to having is underestimating the opposition. "The caliber of wrestlers is crazy-they're really tough." His goal was to win gold, but instead he left with two losses. The positive news is that Mike nearly beat the same wrestler who defeated him during regionals in Battlefords' a few weeks back, during his second match. His first was actually worse. "He was very flat-footed and had some nerves," said Kodiaks' wrestling coach, Pat Mackenzie. The Kodiak's coach said that Mike is in his first year and the caliber in the sport is very very high. "He has a lot of growing to do," Mackenzie said. "By the time he's in Grade 11, he'll be getting medals in provincials. What Mike learned from provincials is that he needs to try harder and not lock up as much. "If I get my take down, I'm good," Mike says, of his bread and butter move. When he does take down his opposition, he just might take the gold down with him.3/20/2006
