School children across Manitoba can now leap to the Go Active! Fitness Challenge where they can sprint and crunch their way towards earning new gym equipment for their schools. McDonalds Restaurants of Canada Limited, with support from the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), proudly announces registration for the 2007/2008 Go Active! Fitness Challenge is now open. The Go Active! Fitness Challenge is an annual program that provides Canadian elementary schools the opportunity to earn $200 in phys-ed credits per participating class, up to a maximum of $500 per school. Teachers can visit www.fitnesschallenge.ca before October 26, 2007 to register. This is the third year the Go Active! Fitness Challenge is open to schools in Manitoba. Last school year in Manitoba, 35 schools and 3,369 students participated and saw an overall 4.7 percent improvement in scores during the course of the Challenge. "I'm proud to extend this exciting opportunity to schools here in Flin Flon," said Darryl Assailly, Flin Flon-The Pas McDonalds Franchisee. "At McDonalds, we're committed to encouraging a balanced, active lifestyle among young Canadians and this program is one of the many ways we are bringing that commitment to life." Inspired by the Canadian Fitness Awards, the Go Active! Fitness Challenge is designed to promote physical activity among students, and is available to elementary schools across the country. Each eligible class that registers at www.fitnesschallenge.ca will receive a Go Active! Fitness Challenge kit that provides all the necessary materials to conduct the Challenge in their school. Participating teachers will test students on a series of six exercises; sit-ups, push-ups, 50-metre dash, shuttle run, standing long jump and an endurance run. Teachers test their students on the same six exercises once in the fall and again in the spring, aiming for individual improvement rather than focusing on excellence. Eligible classes that complete the Challenge and submit their results on the Fitness Challenge website will earn $200 in Wintergreen Phys-ed credits per participating class, up to a maximum of $500 per school.
