Michelle Belfry didn't just achieve her goal of raising $5,000 for breast cancer initiatives Ð she went above and beyond. In an interview with The Reminder, Belfry said she didn't think she'd ever raise that much money. "People have opened their hearts to this cause," she said. "I'm very emotional when I think about it. I'm so grateful to people. "I'm very proud to be part of this community," Belfry said. With The Weekend To End Breast Cancer approaching, Belfry has reached $15,000 in just six weeks, which placed her number two out of 10. "I am overwhelmed and very touched by the support and donations I have received from Flin Flon, Creighton, Denare Beach and all the surrounding northern areas Ð Cranberry Portage, Thompson, Snow Lake, The Pas, and Pukatawagan," Belfry said in a letter. "I am so grateful that so many individuals, families and businesses have seen the importance of donating to this very worthwhile cause. "I have received donations from people I don't even know and will never meet, but I have been awed by the e-mailed stories and cards sent by so many people whose lives have been touched," she continued. "Not only by breast cancer, but by many other types of cancer. It is important for everyone to understand that any breakthroughs in the research for breast cancer will shed light on and lead to many discoveries for all types of cancer Ð as well as other diseases. Did you know that research done for breast cancer has helped in the treatment of Crohn's Disease?" Belfry also said in the letter that she's excited to be walking in the memory of and in honour of survivors and has over 200 names on her t-shirt. "On the sleeves of my t-shirt are the names of my Grade 1 Cheering Squad!" she said. When Belfry participates in the walk, she will also introduce the 'Survivor's Circle' and read a poem during the opening ceremonies, as she was selected to do. "For the closing ceremonies, I will be introducing the walkers as they enter the MTS Center and read another program," she states in the letter. "I feel very privileged to be part of this event."
