Alison Dallas was 27-years-old when she was diagnosed with MS. Four years later, she isn't just living with it, she's trying to help others. With the help of friend, Tricia Mymko, the two have organized their third annual MS Walk. Three years ago Dallas decided to organize an MS Walk in Flin Flon since there wasn't one and she participated in the one in Dauphin. When she got involved, she didn't jump in alone. "Alison told the lady in Dauphin that we were doing it," Mymko said. "That first year was awesome. I went to local businesses for support." Flin Flon, which is considered part of the Parkland region, raised $10,000 as people dug deep into their pockets. This year the walk will start and finish at the Elk's Hall with a noon check-in and start time of 1 p.m. on May 7. People are encouraged to dress properly just in case the weather doesn't cooperate. "We're hoping to raise $12,000," Mymko said. As both work hard to make sure things go smoothly, doing this has special meaning for both. "It's too bad it takes being affected by something to do something about it," Dallas said. "I know there's more that can be done. I walk because I can to support others affected by MS, and their families." Mymko does it to support her long time friend. "I didn't know anything about it until she got it," she explained. "I just try and understand. It's important to me because a lot of people are affected by MS and if there's something I can't stand, it's watching other people suffer and not doing anything to help. If all I can do is walk and collect money, then I will do the best I can." Mymko did have one message for residents. "Come out and have fun while supporting a great cause." For further information contact Alison at 687-0838 or Tricia at 271-1287. People can receive a gift by pledging online at www.supercitieswalk.com. Also, you can be a SOLEmate by walking for a person living with MS. By doing this, you'll show them that someone cares.3/5/06
