Dirty Dozen, With Themselves, Burkee's Bedlam and J were just a few of the nine teams out on the weekend participating in the First Annual Jason Morran Memorial Slo-Pitch Tournament. Teams made their way to Centoba Park to play a fun couple games of slo pitch in memory of the late Dirty Dozen team member. Games were played Friday and Saturday, with the final trophy game Saturday night. Organizer Darren Romo, with Burkee's Bedlam, says he was pleased with the turnout. "It went over really well. It was better than I thought it was going to be," he says. "And we lucked out with the weather; it was a really nice weekend," he added. As for the tournament, Romo says it's something Morran, who passed away just recently, would have loved. "It's definitely something Jay would have wanted, and it's something he would have enjoyed," he says. According to Romo, Morran would have enjoyed the whole weekend, the atmosphere and playing ball with friends. As the title of the tournament includes to word annual, Romo says they are doing it next year, but details have yet to be ironed out. This year's event was pulled together rather quickly, but Romo says it was still very well attended. "It went really well and everything was on short notice, but we somehow got it all together," he says. Dirty Dozen, Morran's team, was presented with the trophy for the weekend tournament, which will be displayed at Burkee's Sports Lounge. Aside from the baseball, a beer garden was also opened where beverages and T-shirts could be purchased. "All the money from the beer, t-shirts and registration is going to the Jason Morran Memorial Fund, which goes to help local athletics," explains Romo. "All the money is going to stay local and help things like minor hockey and other sports," he says.
