It was a tough day for the 10 small Prams out on the water as sailing students tried their hardest to gather at the start line for the qualifying race for the Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games. With six races on the agenda for the day in Denare Beach, Mother Nature had other plans as the wind and waves were too much for the beginning sailors. Two races were completed, which gave two girls and three boys medals, and made up the NorMan Region sailing team. With four of the five medaling sailors moving on to compete in Carman, MB in August, Kristen Erickson, with Sport Manitoba, says she was pleased with the turnout for the day. ÒI got to see the last race, but I didnÕt know if it was still going on,Ó Erickson joked. ÒI didnÕt think they wold be sailing because of the weather. ÒBut I give it to the kids for sailing on that day.Ó With only two of the six races being completed, the Regional Manager of Sport Manitoba says the team was chosen earlier than expected. ÒI know itÕs all about wind, but I give it all to those kids,Ó she said. ÒThere were two races and then the wind picked up in the afternoon. One went out, but capsized.Ó Two boys and two girls make up the NorMan Region sailing team. Eight boys and two girls were out on the water hoping for their chance to represent their region. ÒWe took what we could from those two races,Ó says Erickson. ÒThe girls qualified, but they both raced anyways.Ó Aside from handing out the medals to the recipients, Erickson takes care of the administrative side of the games. But she says when it all comes together, it is fun. ÒItÕs rewarding after sitting behind a desk for a year. I get to see the kids compete and be a part of it. ÒItÕs the best part of the job,Ó she noted. While at the summer games, Erickson says the athletes gain valuable experience. ÒItÕs a stepping stone towards Provincial teams. The games used to be the grassroots, but they have taken a new level of kids to qualify. ÒIt gives them confidence to compete in other communities other than their surrounding ones. And itÕs a new perspective and new kids to play the sport with.Ó With the games going on in the day, Erickson says there are a variety of things for the athletes to do at night, including a dance and a talent night. ÒThere is also a sports dietary clinician...so they learn to eat right to be competitive and how to train properly,Ó she says. Just shy of 200 atheltes will be attending the Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games in Carman this August.
