Princeton junior goaltender Zane Kalemba was recently named one of the top 10 finalists for the 2009 Hobey Baker Award, presented by Mazamba, honoring college hockey's top player, as announced by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation. For the second straight year a top 10 finalist comes from the same school Hobey Baker represented so honorably before World War I. Kalemba's sensational season is such a record breaker, he was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Year, Goalie of the Year and a First Team all-star. Additional honors include Ivy League Player of the Year. While setting single season school records for wins, GAA and save percentage, his 1.69 GAA is fourth in the nation while his .936 save percentage is tied for second. Princeton's rise to third in ECAC Hockey was due to 1.97 team GAA led by his won-loss record of 22-8. He allowed one goal or less in 16 games Ð and was team MVP for the Flin Flon Bombers in juniors. Off the ice, he volunteers with Princeton Youth Hockey and Princeton Disabilities Awareness. Joining Kalemba on the list of finalists are: Louie Caporusso, Michigan; Matt Gilroy, Boston University; Chad Johnson, Alaska Fairbanks; Jacques Lamoureux, Air Force, Jamie McBain, Wisconsin; David McIntyre, Colgate; Viktor Stalberg, Vermont; Brad Thiessen, Northeastern and Colin Wilson, Boston University. The 10 finalists were selected by voting from all 58 Division I college hockey head coaches and by online fan balloting at hobeybaker.com. Next, the 25-member Selection Committee and an additional round of fan balloting (at hobeybaker.com from March 20-30) will determine this year's Hobey Baker winner. Criteria for the award include: strength of character on and off the ice, displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements. The Hobey Hat Trick of three finalists will be announced on April 2, 2009 and the Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced Friday, April 10, 2009 from Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., during the NCAA Frozen Four.
